Fireworks and explosives Flashcards
Hazards
1.Contained in metal boxes lead to mass hazard
2, greatest risk when being heated
3 can react to water, grease, chemicalshock leading to detonation
4. Unlikley explosives can be extinguished when ignited
5. Detonations create shock waves and fragmentation
6. Substantial cover does not protect from pressure waves
two types of explosive materials
deflagration reaction less speed of sound
detonating higher
describe rate of reaction
MDT
red triangle yankee hazard
hazard areas
250kg / small car 200m
251-2000kg and military 1.2 600m
over 2000kg 1000m
radios restricted to
60m
600m military / malicious devices
explosives defined by Hand S executive as
material capable of undergoing a self contained and self exothermic reaction at a rate sufficient to produce pressures on their surroundings
over pressure is
blast wave that can kill
solid surface behind you at expolsion…
double the over pressure
small domestic firework distance
pyrotechnic element
50-100m
100m
who licenses bulk storage fireworks

HSE
LA and Fire Safety
whats an aquire and keep cert
significant hazard as varying quantities black powder Yankee hazard ORD on MDT gun license holders 20kg metal box
sporting ammunition held by members of public less hazard than aerosols therefore
not on MDT
message if explosives
Priority “ explosives confirmed involved “
max staorage for fireworks for domstic use in a shop
250kg in ISO container
if explosives do not explode they are short lived fires normally
90mins
beware turning over ….
some bits remain explosive
Hazard divisions HD1.1 HD1.2 HD1.3 HD1.4 HD1.5 HD1.6
- 1 mass explosion destroy container catastrophic damage to surrounding
- 2 military ammunition projection hazard not mass
- 3 fire hazard,minor blast or projection
- 4 no significant hazard
- 5 sensitive substance mass explosion hazard
- 6 insenstive substance no mass hazard
Organic peroxides 5.2 more sensative and likl;ey to explode than explosives
transport regs dangerous goods
2009
plain orange plate front and rear
also displaying hazard warning diamonds if explosives
6.8 Hazard zones, the following cordons will be set at the following distances by the IC:
•
200 metres for explosives up to 250kg or approximately the size of as mall car.
• 600 metres for explosives 251kg – 2000kg and any military explosive munitions HD1.2. •
