117-138AD under Hadrian
What was the layout?
Restored in 207AD
Main entrance is on the east and opens up to the palaestra in the centre
Courtyard surrounded by a portico with 18 rooms
Water is stored in 2 cisterns at the sides of the entrance
Looked almost entirely inwards - only slit windows facing the streets
Shrine dedicated to the imperial cult- SS, MA, LV, AP - dominated the west side of the building

Monochrome mosaics depicting sacrifice of a bull
What was the main focus?
Put out fires in the city and ensure the grain remained unharmed

The imperial cult- wasn’t a gift from the towns people

Claudius in 41-54AD
