Firefighters - L9 Flashcards
1
Q
Limitations?
A
- simulated events; ecological validity as don’t feel same pressure as they would in real life so results could vary significantly
- limited consideration of alternative courses of action and contingencies
- SPONTANEOUS; not always formulating plan in head based on categories; unrealistic?
2
Q
(HOW?) Hypothesis 1?
A
- an assumption of how analytical decision-making happens in incident commanders (SA, PF, PE)
3
Q
Future implications?
A
- better DM protocols
- improved firefighter safety
- improves situational awareness
- helps to shed a light on severity of incidents AND pressure that FRS have to undergo on daily basis
4
Q
(WHY?) 3 ideas of history behind study?
A
- road traffic collisions on M4
- house fires
- see how group DM works
5
Q
(WHY?) What did research initially involve and what did it develop to?
A
- individual DM in incident commanders in UK FRS
- developed to include multi-agency group DM @ incidents
6
Q
(WHY?) Main reason behind study?
A
- improving safety of firefighters
- 2523 injured (2014)
7
Q
Strengths?
A
- allows for replication (real incidents recorded and process of DM was coded in terms of SA, PF, PE)
8
Q
(HOW?) Primary data
A
- recordings of events at 33 incidents
9
Q
(RESULTS?) Critical finding?
A
- jump straight from SA to PE and skip PF
10
Q
(HOW?) What did they do after the critical finding and why?
A
- created decision controls to see if PF could be encouraged
- made explicit goals
- became more future focused
