The Ontario Fire Service, Fire Fighters Guidance Note - # 1-5 Life Safety Rope and Equipment
states the following; “At minimum, the following criteria should be met before reusing life safety
rope”:
A) Rope has been cleaned thoroughly after each call.
B) Rope has not been visually damaged, exposed to heat, direct flame, impingement or abrasion impact
load or exposed to liquids, solids, gases or mists or vapors of any chemical or material that can
deteriorate rope.
C) Just replace the rope and forego the inspection.
D) If there is any doubt about the serviceability of a rope, you can keep it in service and do not use it for
life safety activities.
