Fire science Flashcards
Pyrolysis
The decomposition of a substance by heat. When it is heated it will decompose and give of flammable gasses.
Auto ignition temperature
The lowest temperature at which fuel will ignite and continue to burn without the need for an ignition source
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which sufficient vapours are being produced for a momentary ‘flash’ to occur when an ignition source is introduced to the fuel.
The burning vapours does not continue once the ignition source is removed.
Surface Oxidation
Substances making up the surface of the solid react with oxygen from the atmosphere, generating sufficient heat to be a self sustaining process.
Fire point
Lowest temperature at which sufficient vapours are being produced for the fuel to ignite and continue to burn once an ignition source is introduced. If the ignition source is the removed, the vapours will continue to burn.
This temperature is only slightly above flash point. It will continue to burn for 5 seconds after ignition
