What to do in the event of a fire?
Never yell “Fire.” The code for fire is “Dr. Red.”
ARCE is used to remember the steps
A - Alarm (Activate the fire alarm pull station)
R - Rescue (Call out Dr. Red Remove any immediate danger)
C - Contain (Keep Fire from spreading by closing doors. Do not block fire doors)
E - Extinguish (Fire extinguishers are located on the nursing floors, at the end of each corridor, dining room entrances, and corridors throughout the facility)
Types of extinguishers
ABC - all purpose
(on all types of fires )
BC - bicarbonate
(used of fires caused by grease or electricity )
C - carbon dioxide
(for electrical fires and burning liquids )
Silver - pressurized water
(Used on wood; textiles and paper fire)
Procedure of use of a extinguisher?
PASS
Pull the pin
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Spray from side to side
The fire alarm system
Addressable fire alarm system meaning that each fire alarm device has a unique bell code and location
Smoke / heat detectors / ansul system
Manual pull stations
Automatic sprinkler suppression system (water flow)
Activating any of these will cause the fire alarm to activate and the alarm to sound
Fire alarms and strobe lights
When the fire alarm is activated, you will hear “Dr. RED” the location/room number 3 times. A whooping noise will sound and strobe lights will come on the fire floor, floor above, and floor below.
Evacuation
Horizontal - evacuate to a safe place in the floor; behind fire doors
Vertical - evacuate floor or building using stairwell or elevator (only if directed by FDNY or senior administrator)
Evacuate the fire from, the rooms on both side and the the room across from the fire room
Place the searched and evacuated door knob tag on the outside of the door one the room has been searched and evacuated
