Fire Detection/Protection Flashcards
(B) What airplane systems have fire detection and protection?
1 - Engines
2 - APU
3 - Cargo Compartments
4 - Lavatories
(B) Are the cockpit and cabin protected from fire?
Yes
Cockpit - 1 Halon Fire Extinguisher
Cabin - 3 Halon Fire Extinguishers and 1 Water Extinguisher
(B) How are the engines and APU protected from fire?
Engines - 2 Halon Fire Bottles ( A and B)
APU - 1 Halon Fire Bottle
(B) Can both engines fire bottles be used for one engine if needed?
Yes
(B) What is the power source for engine and APU fire detection and protection?
Engine Protection - HOT BATT 1 and 2
Engine Detection - DC ESS 1 and 2
APU Protection - DC ESS 2
APU Detection - DC ESS 1 and 2
(B) Describe the engine and APU fire detection system?
Engine - 8 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops) per engine
APU - 2 pneumatic fire detectors (2 loops) per engine
(T) Explain how system detects the overheat or fire?
One of the loops loses pressure within the loops, sends signal to MAU to provide an alert into the cockpit.
(B) What happens when an engine fire handle is pulled?
Fuel SOV closes
Hydraulic SOV closes
Engine Bleed SOV closes
(B) What is an indication of an APU fire?
- Fire bell
- Red stripe in the emergency stop button illuminates
- APU AFIRE is displayed on the EICAS
(B) Will the APU automatically shut down if a fire is detected?
ONLY on the ground
(B) What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is pushed after a fire has been detected?
1 - APU shuts off immediately without a 1-minute cool-down
2 - APU Fuel SOV Closes
3 - APU FIRE EXT button illuminates
(B) What happens if the APU EMER STOP button is not pushed after a fire has been detected?
After 1 - minute the APU Fire Ext button illuminates
(B) Will the APU fire extinguisher automatically discharge?
NO
(B) How many smoke detectors are installed in the cargo compartments?
- Fwd Compartment (3)
- Aft Compartment (2)
(B) What happens to the FWD cargo compartment in the event smoke is detected?
- Recirculation fan shuts-off
2. Ventilation outflow valve closes
(B) What is the purpose of the recirculation and outflow valve in the forward cargo compartment?
- Prevents oxygen from entering the compartment
2. Prevents halon agent from escaping into the aircraft’s cabin
(B) How many fire extinguishing bottles are installed for the cargo compartment?
- 2 bottles used for both compartments
- 1 High-Rate/1 Low-Rate
(B) What is the difference between the high-rate bottle and the low-rate bottle?
- High-rate bottle saturates the compartment immediately (1min)
- Low-rate bottle maintains saturation over a duration of time(1hr)
(B) How long will the low-rate bottle remain active in the compartment?
60 minutes
(B) Can one bottle be used for one compartment and the other bottle for the other compartment?
No. Only one compartment because the fire must be extinguished by the high-rate bottle and maintain saturation after that with the low-rate bottle
(B) What happens when a cargo extinguishing button is pushed if smoke has been detected?
- Cargo light illuminates
- High-rate bottle discharges immediately
- Low-rate bottle discharges after 1 minute
NOTE: With WOW, Low-rate bottle does not discharge automatically
- Low-rate bottle discharges after 1 minute
(B) During flight, can the low-rate bottle be discharged before the minute is up?
Yes, by pressing the button again
(B) How can the low-rate bottle be discharged if the airplane is on the ground?
Pressing the button after discharging the high-rate bottle
(B) Can cargo extinguishing be used if no smoke is detected?
Yes - The High-Rate bottle must be pressed twice
Then the Low-Rate bottle discharges after 1 minute
