An integrated system of underground or overhead piping or both connected to a source of extinguishing agent or medium, designed in which when actuated by its automatic device, stops fire within the area protected.
AUTOMATIC FIRE
SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
Pipeline system filled with water and connected to a constant water supply for the use of the
service and the occupants of the
building solely for fire suppression purposes.
COMBINATION
STAND-PIPE
A type of standpipe system in which the pipes are normally not filled with water. Water is introduced into the system through fire service connections when needed.
DRY STANDPIPE
A fire alarm system activated by the presence of a fire, where the signal is transmitted to designated locations instead of sounding a general alarm, in order to prevent panic.
FIRE ALERTING SYSTEM
The time duration that a material or construction can withstand the effects of standard fire test. (1, 2 or 3 hrs.)
FIRE RESISTANCE RATING
A wall designed to prevent the spread of .fire, having a fire resistance rating of not less than four (4) hours with sufficient structural stability to remain standing even if construction or either side collapse.
FIRE WALL
The time in which flame will
spread over the surface of a
burning material.
FLAME SPREAD RATING
Any compound, or mixture which when applied properly improves the fire-resistant quality of fabrics and other materials like wood.
FIRE (FLAME) RETARDANT
A gas, fume, or vapor used for the destruction or control of insects, fungi, vermin, germs, rodents or other pests.
FUMIGANT
A continuous and unobstructed
route or exit from any point in a
building, structure, or facility to
a public way.
MEANS OF EGRESS
A mechanical device consisting of linkages and a horizontal bar across a door, which cause the door to open and facilitates exit from a building, structure.
PANIC HARDWARE
An air compartment or chamber
to which one or more ducts are
connected and which form part
of an air distribution system.
PLENUM
A device constructed for burning refuse, trash.
INCINERATOR
A gate with four arms set at right
angles, revolving on a central
post, allowing the passage of
only one person at a time.
TURNSTILES
P. D. 1185 prohibits the obstruction of fire exits. fire hydrants overcrowding beyond authorized capacities, locking fire exits, use of jumpers.
