Fire Classes Flashcards
Class A
Ordinary combustibles:
wood, cloth, rubber and some plastics
Extinguish with water.
Class B
Flammable Liquids and Gases
Extinguish with dry chemicals, halogenated suppressants (FM 200), or foam. Halon is no longer recommended due to ozone depletion.
Class C
Energized electrical equipment
Extinguish by shutting off electricity then dry chemicals or carbon dioxide. Wet products, including foam can conduct electricity.
Class D
Combustible metals:
sodium, titanium, magnesium, potassium, uranium, lithium, plutonium, and calcium.
Extinguish with dry powders, most commonly sodium chloride granules and graphite powder.
Water can excite combustible metals and cause the fire to spread.
Class K
Cooking oils and fats
Extinguish with dry-powder (not the same as dry chemical) or carbon dioxide.
Saponification can also be used.
