Fire And Smoke Flashcards
What are the three elements need to make a fire?
- heat
- oxygen
- fuel
What are the three classes of fire?
- combustibles and solid materials
- flammable liquids and gases
- electrical fire
What are the four types of fire fighting equipment?
- BCF/ Halon
- Hafex
- PBE (protective breathing equipment)
- fireproof/ protective gloves
What does BCF/ Halon do?
Is a liquefied gas that extinguishes fire by interrupting a fires combustion chain.
What does Hafex do?
Contains a high performance clean extinguishing agent that is designed for applications where firefighting performance is the most important factor.
What does PBE do?
Smoke hoods protect the users eyes and respiratory system against the heat, smoke and/ or toxic gasses.
What do fireproof/ protective gloves do?
Made of a heat resistant material, they protect the hands when removing hot material or burnt debris in order to get the the source of the fire.
What is the general fire fighting procedure
ALERT other cabin crew
CHECK for heat
LOCATE and attack
FIGHT fire aggressively
Commander must be INFORMED
What are circuit breakers?
Automatic electrical switches which protect an electrical circuit from damage in case of overload/ overheating.
They interrupt the current flow by tripping out of the normal position.
What is smoke?
A visible suspension of carbon and other toxic particles in the air, typically emitted from a burning substance.
What does the term ‘mushrooming’ mean?
When smoke and gases rise vertically until they strike a roof of ceiling, then they will spread out sideways.
What does the colour of the smoke tell you?
Can give indication as to the material involved in the fire.
What are fumes?
Particles made of Vapor, dust or smoke emitted by a substance because of heating, explosion or various chemical reactions.
What does RFFS stand for?
Rescue and fire-fighting services
In case circuit breakers will trip, what is CC action
Do not re-engage it and inform commander immediately
How much time do RFFS have to respond?
3 minutes
What burns in class A fires?
Wood, paper, cloth
What burns in class B fires?
Grease, oil, paint, solvents
What burns in class C fires?
Electrical panel, motor, wiring
In the event of an electrical fire what should you do?
Switch off the relevant equipment and pull out associated circuit breaker
What are probable causes of fires in the galley
- electrical malfunction
- fats/ oils
- inserts
- papers
- debris in oven
What is a hot spot check
Using the back of your hand to see if abnormally hot
How long should you wait after fully emptying fire extinguisher, to check for re-ignition
1.5 minutes
Should you use a fire extinguisher on a person on fire?
No, a curtain, coat, blanket etc
- non synthetic material
