finite & renewable resources Flashcards
4 things humans use the earth’s resources for
warmth
shelter
food
transport
what are natural resources supplemented by?
agriculture
what do natural resources provide
food
timber
clothing
fuels
sustainable development
development that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
renewable resources
resources that can be replaced at the same rate at which they are being used
where do natural resources come from?
earth
oceans
atmosphere
what does agriculture provide?
conditions where natural resources can be enhanced for our needs
give 5 examples of renewable resources
timber
fresh water
food
leather
cotton
give 5 examples of finite resources
-fossil fuels e.g crude oil, coal
-nuclear fuels
-metals / minerals found in ores
-natural gas
-limestone
natural products and man-made relationship with examples
natural products can be replaced by synthetic products or improved upon by man-made processes
e.g rubber is natural, extracted from sap however man made polymers which can replace rubber in tyres
e.g crude oil is natural and undergoes fractional distillation to produce fuels like petrol
e.g metal ores can be reduced to produce pure metals
evaluate metal ores
-good as useful products can be made
-provides jobs
-brings money into area
-however bad for environment
-uses lots of energy
-scars the landscape
-produces lots of waste
-destroys habitats
