Oil based Characteristics
Applied via brushing in thin layers in the direction of the grain, on a sanded surface,
Tougher,
Harder wearing,
Possibly water-proof, Polyurethane Varnish is good for outdoors,
Worse for the environment,
Can be washed out with white spirit,
Water based Characteristics
Applied via rubbing in with the grain,
Less durable, Less hardwearing
Doesn’t change colour,
Wood stain changes colour of wood,
Better for environment,
DOESN’T GIVE PROTECTION, must use varnish afterwards
Primer Characteristics
Creates a layer for stains and varnishes to apply to MDF,
Makes sure the paint doesn’t soak into MDF,
Makes de-nibbing easy
Apply with grain
Woodstain Characteristics
Changes colour of wood,
Sand down all glues before applying,
When applying apply with grain
Rub down to spread evenly,
3 coats (usually)
Gloss Characteristics
High shine
Top of spectrum
Spray Paint Characteristics
Even coat
No brushstrokes
8 inches away from target (roughly)
The thicker the varnish/paint the more pressure it takes.
Dries faster than paint brush
Can apply 3-4 coats if water based
Wash out oil based with white spirit
Wax based Characteristics
Wax takes a while to apply
Wax is easy to repair
Polyx oil isn’t good for the environment
Finish scale
Gloss
Satin
Eggshell
Matte
What does De-Nibbing mean?
The process of gently sanding between finishes with a high grit abrasive paper to smooth over any imperfections in the finish.
