6 months
first two fingers hold the object against the thumb

?
order of crayon/ pencil writing
palmar supinate
digital pronate
static tripod
dynamic tripod
palmar supinate
1-2 years
Pencil or crayon held in palm with fisted flexed grasp with all fingers
digital pronate
2-3 years
This is where the child will turn their palm around so their little finger faces the ceiling. They continue to hold the pencil in all of their fingers, with it resting against their palm.
static tripod
3-4 years
pencil is held with thumb index finger and long finger the motion comes from the shoulder, elbow, or wrist with a static grasp… no movement of the finger tips during writing
dynamic tripod
by age 5
pencil is held with thumb index finger and long finger the motion comes from the fingers
lateral tripod
the thumb crosses over the shaft of the pencil, and the pad of the thumb often rests against the index finger (instead of the pencil shaft). This often blocks the full range of finger movements when compared to a dynamic tripod grasp.
in hand manipulation skills
All happening in pre-school years (4-5 years)
ability to hold and move an object within one hand
rotation
translation
shift
rotation
move the pencil from the writing to the erasing position
spinning something on an axis –> winding a wind up toy
simple rotation
turning an object around in the pads of the fingers and thumb (spinning a top, winding up a wind up toy)
complex rotation
turning an object from end to end (flipping a pencil from writing to erasing)
translation
moving something from the palm to the fingers or fingers to palm
shift
the ability to move an object in a linear manner with the fingertips, (repositioning pencil in the fingers to position for writing or fanning playing cards in the hand, buttoning) (siding something across fingers with thumb)
in hand manipulation with stabilization
means theres already something in the hand… pick up a piece of paper put it in your palm then pick up anther piece with the same hand (radial side = precision) (ulnar side= stabilization)
open web space
The open area between the thumb and index finger when you make an OK sign or tip to tip pinch
holding scissor progression
2 hands –> 1.5-2 years
pronated –> 2
mature scissor grasp –> 5-6 years
