Find unit rates Flashcards
What is a unit rate?
A unit rate is the how much of something per 1 unit of something else
For example 140 cars pass by in 2 hours, so the unit rate is 70 cares per hour
45mins = 3/4 h
15mins = 1/4 h
30mins = how much of a hour?
20mins = how much of a hour?
45mins = 3/4 h
15mins = 1/4 h
30mins = 1/2 h
20mins = 1/3 h
What is a ratio?
It is a way to compare between two of the same kind of quantities by using division.
What is a rate?
It is a ratio that compares two different quantities with different units.
Example: Ahmed writes 140 words every three minutes.
What is The first method of finding unite rates?
It is by using division for example the rate is 36 square feet in 3/4 hour can be written as 36/ 3/4
36/ 3/4 = 36 ÷ 3/4 First step: turn the rate into two fractions
36/1 ÷ 3/4 Second step: use KCF
36/1 x 4/3 Third step: multiply
= 144/3 or 48
What is the second step of finding unit rates?
By using proportion,
36/ 3/4 = ?/1 First step: we multiply both of them by 1.
36/1 ÷ 3/4 Second step: Use KCF
36/1 x 4/3 Third step: multiply to get the final answer
= 144/3 or 48
What is KCF?
KCF means keep, change and flip.
So first we keep the first fraction as it is
Flip the symbol
And flip the second fraction
