Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, & Petition
1st) People can speak their minds, practice any religion, publish news, gather in groups, and ask the government for change
Right to Bear Arms
2nd) Citizens can own and carry weapons for protection
No Quartering of Soldiers
3rd) The government can’t force people to house soldiers in their homes
No Unreasonable Searches & Seizures
4th) The police can’t search your property or take your things without a warrant or good reason
Rights of the Accused
5th) You can’t be forced to testify against yourself (“I plead the Fifth!”), can’t be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy), and must be given due process before punishment
Right to a Fair & Speedy Trial
6th) If accused of a crime, you have the right to a quick trial, a lawyer, a jury, and to know what you’re accused of
Right to Jury in Civil Cases
7th) If you sue someone for over $20, you have the right to a jury trial
No Cruel and Unusual Punishment
8th) The government can’t give excessive bail or fines, and can’t torture people for crimes
People Have More Rights Than Just These
9th) Just because a right isn’t listed doesn’t mean people don’t have it (it protects personal freedoms)
State’s Rights
10th) If the Constitution doesn’t say the federal government controls something, the states do (like education laws)
