7 Principles of The Constitution Flashcards
Popular Sovereignty
The people have power in the government by voting and participating in decisions (government based on the consent of the people)
Republicanism
Citizens elect representatives to make laws and decisions for them (like Congress members)
Federalism
A system dividing power between federal and state governments
Separation of Powers
The government is split into three branches (legislative, executive, judicial) so that no one group has all the power
Checks and Balances (1787)
Created by the framers of the Constitution. A system ensuring no branch of government becomes too powerful by giving each branch oversight of the others
Limited Government
The government just follow the law and can’t do whatever it wants. The Constitution limits its power
Individual Rights
The Bill of Rights protects people’s freedoms, like free speech, religion, and a fair trial.
