Most disagreed with the couple’s reason why they’re the most pitiful
What were the other passengers’ reasons for disagreeing with the couple?
One says that his son has been sent to the front longer than the couple’s son
Another reasons that he has two sons and three nephews sent to the front so he loses more
How does the fat red-faced man react to their squabble? And why?
He interrupts them, saying “Nonsense”.
He tells the other parents how their children are not born for them or for their country but because they simply must be born and the child takes his parents’ lives with him, even as he grows

He basically tells them that they should calmly accept their sons’ decisions regardless of what happens, and that if their sons do die in the war, they died smiling with no regrets
Why did the fat man cry when the woman asked him “Is your son really dead?”
It was only then that reality hit the fat man and he realized that he will never see his son again
