Finals: Post lab Flashcards
These are structurally diverse organic compounds obtained from living organisms
lipids
- derived from fatty acids
* e.g. fats and waxes which contain ester linkages and can be hydrolyzed.
hydrolyzable lipids
e.g. cholesterol and other steroids which don’t have ester linkages and can’t be hydrolyzed.
non-hydrolyzable
Carboxylic acids (RCOOH) with long carbon chains of 12-20 carbon atoms.
fatty acid
Saturated fatty acids have
hydrocarbon chains connected by single bonds only and is solid at room temperature.
Unsaturated fatty acids have
one or more double bonds, are liquid at room temperature
Most common unsaturated fatty acids are
linoleic and linolenic acids
contain one double bond between carbon atoms
Monounsaturated
- Derived from fatty acids having larger number of double bonds
- Have lower melting points liquids at room temperature
oils
Almost 90% of dietary lipids are composed mainly of
Triacylglycerols-dietary lipids
it contains several double or triple bonds between carbon atoms
Polyunsaturated
- Derived from fatty acids having few double bonds
2.Have higher melting points solids at room temperature
fats
A non polar organic solvent used in this experiment to extract lipids from potato chips
Petroleum ether
Light, volatile, petroleumfraction predominantly composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons
Petroleum ether
