FINALS GENITOURINARY Flashcards
Includes the urinary and reproductive systems
The urinary system eliminates liquid waste from the
body in the form of urine.
GENITOURINARY SYSTEM
Organs are distributed among:
The retroperitoneal space
Abdomen
Genitals.
Composed of kidneys, renal
vasculature (blood vessels), ureters, urinary
bladder, and urethra.
The urinary system
acts through the kidneys to
prevent the accumulation of nitrogenous wastes,
promote fluid and electrolyte balance, assists in
maintenance of blood pressure, and contributes to
erythropoiesis
URINARY SYSTEM
During assessment of the urinary system, the nurse
uses three landmarks to locate and palpate the
kidneys and urinary bladder.
○ Costovertebral Angle
○ Rectus Abdominis Muscle
○ Symphysis Pubis
Bean-shaped organs located in the retroperitoneal
space on either side of the vertebral column.
KIDNEYS
Filter more than 1 liter (L) of fluid each minute.
GLOMERULI
The inner portion of each kidney is called the
The outer portion of each kidney is called the
Renal medulla
Renal Cortex
mucus-lined narrow tube approximately 25 to 30 cm (10 to 20 in.)
transporting urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder.
UTERUS
mucus-lined tube that transports
urine from the urinary bladder to the exterior.
URETHRA
hollow, muscular, collapsible pouch that acts as a reservoir for urine.
◆ Storing urine temporarily
◆ Contracting to release urine during
micturition
URINARY BLADDER
Mound of adipose tissue overlying the
symphysis pubis.
MONS PUBIS
Includes the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora,
greater vestibular glands, and clitoris.
EXTERNAL GENITALIA AND PERINEUM
a dual set of liplike structures
lying on either side of the vagina.
LABIA
two thin, elongated tissues that overlie the vaginal and
urethral openings as well as several glandular
openings.
enclosed labia minora
two thick, elongated pads of tissue that become fuller
toward the center, and are covered with
coarse hair extending from the mons pubis.
exterior labia majora
most commonly spread during sexual
activities.
★ Nits and lice feed on blood.
★ Bites can cause severe itching and redness.
PEDICULOSIS PUBIS
Small, elongated mound of erectile tissue.
CLITORIS
The terminal end of the gastrointestinal system.
ANUS
Caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
One or more blisters around the genitalia,
rectum, or mouth.
GENITAL HERPES
A bacterial infection
Can damage different organs and induce life
threatening conditions.
SYPHILIS
a painful condition and common sign of
Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection.
ABSCESS OF BARTHOLIN’S GLAND
the tube that carries the urine from the
bladder to the exterior, becomes inflamed and
irritated.
URETHRITIS
One of the most commonly used speculums.
Used if the client had intercourse or is
sexually active but has not given birth.
PEDERSON VAGINAL SPECULUM
Larger than the Pederson, making it a better
choice for clients with longer vaginal canal or
vaginal walls with more elasticity.
Used if the client has given birth vaginally.
GRAVES VAGINA SPECULUM
Swollen veins in the lower rectum that causes
bleeding and discomfort.
- Straining during bowel movement
- Obesity
- Prolonged sitting in the toilet
- Constipation
- Spicy foods
CAUSES OF HEMORRHOID
- Small tear in the lining of the anus
- Wound in the opening
- Can be caused by constipation (hard stool) or
trauma (anal sex)
ANAL FISSURE
Sign of pelvic inflammatory disease
Manipulation of the cervix
CAHDNLIERS SIGN
Exhibited by bright red blood in stool
LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT BLEEDING
Exhibited by black tarry stool
UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT BLEEDING
Centrally located between the left and right groin
areas and lies directly in front of the scrotum.
PENIS
Loosely hanging, pliable, pear-shaped pouch of
darkly pigmented pigmented skin that is located behind the penis.
SCROTUM
producing spermatozoa and secreting testosterone.
TESTES
Inability to retract the foreskin
PHIMOSIS
Abnormal opening locate below the end of the
penis to the scrotum
HYPOSPADIAS
Inability to return the foreskin back to its normal
position over the tip of the penis
PARAPHIMOSIS
Abnormal opening locate above the end of the
penis to the scrotum
EPISPADIAS
Darken the room and shine a light from the back
of the scrotum through the mass. Look for a red
glow.
