Iambic pentameter
A line if verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short(or unstressed) syllable followed by one long( or stressed) syllable
Ex. Two households, both alike in dignity
Foreshadowing
When the author hints something that will happen later in the story
Monologue
A speech given by an actor on stage, usually when alone
Soliloquy
A speech given by an actor alone on stage- reveals characters inner feelings and emotions
Dialogue
Conversation between too or more people
Rising action
A series of events that build up to the turning point in the story
Climax
The turning point in the story, characters realize something important, most intense or highest point
Falling action
Action after the climax conflict is starting to get resolved
Resolution
The conflict is ended and the story finishes
Prose
the ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse.
Couplet
Two line of verse usually in the same meter and joining by rhyme, that form a unit
Pun
A play on words-words sound alike but have different meanings
Blank verse
unrhymed verse, especially the unrhymed iambic pentameter most frequently used in English dramatic, epic, and reflective verse.
Free verse
verse that does not follow a fixed metrical pattern.
Irony
Three types, verbal, dramatic, situational
Tragedy
A story ending in tragedy because of a triads flaw in the characters
