Alliteration
repetition of the first consonant sounds in words

Anaphora
repetition of words at the beginning of phrases, clauses, or lines
Assonance
repetition of vowel sounds in non-rhyming words. Ex: Joey slowly rowed his boat home
Consonance
repetition of consonant sounds at the ends of words. Ex: The stick broke my back
Couplet
a two-line stanza
Free-verse poem
an unmetered, unrhymed poem that closely resembles natural speech
Hyperbole
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
Metaphor
comparing two UNLIKE things WITHOUT using “like” or “as”
Narrative Poem
a poem that tells a story; contains characters, setting, plot

a poem in praise of someone or something

words that sound like their meaning
