2
Q

Explain how the photoelectric effect happens?

A

Light hits a metal surface and electrons from the metal are emitted. The electrons dont like to leave the metal because it takes energy but the light gives it the energy it needs. the amount of energy that the electrons leave with depends on the wavelength of light.

11
Q

Explain the expectation vs the outcome of the photoelectric effect and its relation with intensity?

A

The expectation is it should work if the intensity is high enough because Inetnsity is proportional to energy. However, this is not the case because you only get potential enegry if the frequency is greater than vo. So v>vo

16
Q

What is it called when an electron in an atom gains energy?

A

absorption

17
Q

What is it called when an electron in an atom loses energy?

A

emission

18
Q

Explain atomic excitation and emission.

A

When a photon is directed at an atom, the electron goes from the ground state to the excited state, it falls back down to the ground state, loses energy and emits a photon

19
Q

Explain the Bohr Model for a hydrogen atom.

A

tiny electron orbits a massive proton on a ring pathway. It has a quantized radi and quantized energy levels. It predicts the locations of spectral lines

20

Negative potential energy is ____.

A

attraction
