Belgian ruler known for his involvement in the Congo which included enslavement and mutilation of native people forced to work in the rubber industry.
Rudyard Kippling
English writer known for “The White Man’s Burden,” a poem about White people colonizing far off lands as though it was their duty.
Edward D. Morel
Wrote “The Black Man’s Burden” about how their way of life was impacted by the white man. basically about their opression
Triple Alliance
Alliance between Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary that existed through WWI
Triple Entente
Alliance between France, Russia, and the UK
Wilfred Owen
Wrote “Dulce et Decorum Est” and “Disabled” basically about how bad the war was.
Dulce et Decorum Est
“It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s nation.” The poem was about how the war was glorified though it was actually terrible
Vladimir Lenin
Professional revolutionary, led a 3 year civil war starting in 1917 where the Bolsheviks assumed control of Russia. Died in 1924
Peter Stolypin
Minister of the Interior. Tried to stop political unrest after the 1905 revolution
Leon Trotsky
Built up the Red army in the revolution. Thrown out of the party in 1927, settled in Mexico, and was assassinated in 1940
Gregory Rasputin
Was kind of a whore. He helped Alexis (son of Nicholas II) and became a member of the royal entourage. It took several attempts to murder him in 1916.
Czar Nicholas II
Last czar of Russia, deposed in 1917. He and his family were executed by bolsheviks in 1918
Emma Goldman
An anarchist who was considered dangerous and was deported back to Russia. There, she supported the Bolshevik revolution but then wrote about her disillusionment.
Mussolini
Italian fascist ruler. Wanted to bring back the Roman empire to Italy. He eventually became Hitler’s puppet.
Joseph Stalin
Man involved with the Russian revolution. Assumed control of Russia after Lenin died, which resulted in stalinification of Russia. Was very paranoid.
The Great Purge
Led by Stalin, it led to the repression of peasants, purges of Communist party, government, and red army officials. Also, it let to constant surveillance.
Armistice
An agreement to an end of arms. This is how WWI ended. It later led to the Treaty of Versailles.
Nuremberg Laws
A set of laws put in place by Hitler in an effort to repress Jewish people and strip away their freedoms.
The Diary of a Young Girl
Anne Frank’s diary; the story of her time hiding away in the attic. Her father published it after the war.
Apartheid
Racial segregation system put in place in South Africa. It existed through the 1970’s, when it was finally disbanded due to unpopular global opinion.
Cold War
The period from 1945 until the late 80’s/early 90’s where there was a constant fear of an all-out nuclear war and Communist aggression.
Cuban missile crisis
The USSR placed missiles in Cuba during the Kennedy administration. It ended when we agreed to remove missiles in Turkey.
My Lai Massacre
A massacre of an entire Vietnamese village during the Vietnam war.
Globalization
People becoming integrated globally through interrelatedness
Neoliberalism
An economic policy of free market trade and laissez-faire
Time-Space Compression
A term used to describe the world as if it were getting smaller, because communication and travel can occur more rapidly.
Blitzkrieg
A German “Lightning War,” involving a constant air attack.
Duck and Cover
A video made during the Cold War era to teach people to duck and cover in the event of a nuclear attack.
Persepolis
Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel focusing on her experiences growing up during the Iranian revolution before she was sent to Vienna by her parents.
Iranian Revolution
Revolution occurring in the Late 1970’s in Iran, leading to an extreme religious rule. This replaced a former Western-style monarchy system.
McWorld
A term described by Benjamin Barber referring to the globalization of politics, or how interrelatedness is becoming a global affair with stems in economics as well as other fields.
