Final Prep Flashcards
what is a philosophy of ministry
a statement that defines why we do what we do.
The Gospel
The announcement that in the life, death, and res. of Jesus, the Triune God has acted decisively to reconcile the world to Himself
Gospel-Cent. Min
The intentional effort to announce the Good News of Jesus and to help people experience its reality, both individ. and in comm. with others
“Trinitarian center” of ministry
Father - originate
Son - model
Holy Spirit - empower
Ministry as Service
serving=you can still keep your integrity
servant=something we choose to do and has to do with who we are
Ministry as Participation
Participation in God’s Grace=> restoring people; Jesus does the work
Participation in God’s Presence=> God enters in as we enter in
Ministry as Spiritual Activity
We are involved in spiritual ministry (unseen kingdom, angels and demons), expecting spiritual results (redempt. of souls, building kingdom), through spiritual means (Word and prayer)
How Missio Dei effects the mission of the church
The mission off the church must be the same as the mission of God, which is to bring glory to Himself
Missional Ministry
- externally focused
- culturally engaged
- incarnationally driven
- organically organized
Cultural Context of Ministry
- every church has a way of doing things
- culture is always being formed
- culture is always at risk of becoming like culture outside the church
How does a theology of ministry guide our role as cultural agents
Take the theology of the Gospel + cultural exegesis and turn it to active engagement (actions) with the world around us. Colossians 4:5-6.
Requirements for Ministry
1 Timothy 3:1-7
Roles and Functions
As opposed to job/task (technical skills), roles and functions refers to spiritual gifting and being a part of something bigger
Shared Ministry
Not solo activity; Mark 6:7 disciples sent in twos (for sake of witness reception); 1 Corinthians 12 - the Body of Christ for sake of one another
How to focus the efforts of a church toward theological goals
A collaborative effort to reach the overall theological goals. There’s accountability in this, and there’s editability… we get to weigh in on one another’s missions.
Key Texts for Authority of Min. Leader
Titus 2:15
Hebrews 13:17
How Proper Theo of Authority Helps Defend Against Resistance
- Authority is derived from Jesus rather than inherent
- Authority is purposeful – blessing and protection
- Authority is built upon character
- Authority is exercised with humility
- Authority is more about responsibility than position
Biblical Examples of Theo of Identity
Identity in Jesus - Gal. 2:20
Identity as Min. Leaders - Prophet, Priest, King; Shepherd metaphor
Special Call vs General Call
Apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, teachers vs. shepherd, overseer, elder, deacon
How and what to measure in ministry
- Individual lives that affected by the Gospel
- Measure ways Kingdom priorities and practices are present in the Body
- Individual and collective influence in the community
- Measure the kind of stories being told
- Measure the manner in which people are involved in ministries
- Measure the way people worship
- Measure the interaction of believers
How to gauge success through theo. lens
Personal faithfulness – taking gifts and using them where you are presently, for the Master and not for ourselves
Collective faithfulness – faithfulness within community internally and externally (having redemptive influence with culture around it)
