Final Part 2 Flashcards

Q

Explain this significant moment in Canada:

Finding of Canada / aboriginal-European contact

A
  • culture clash between aboriginals and Europeans
  • aboriginals and Europeans were involved
  • this happened in North America in 1500s-1600s (around 1610, more 1600s)
  • the culture clash happened because of the language barriers (miscommunication between word like own and share and numerical values). As well as the different relationships they had with the land (aboriginals had more of a holistic view on it - interconnected ness with nature, and Europeans had hierarchal relationship with humans on top and everything else including nature on the very bottom and the only thing they saw in the land was resources and money!) they also had different governance and decision making (aboriginals had a merit, community approach to decisions and reciprocity with the community, Europeans had hierarchy again - only the wealthy people could make the decisions) other things such as farming and fur trade also had some cause to this as well.
  • historical significance for canada because it was the end of First Nations dominating canada, now it was the Europeans
  • because of this moment canada has developed in a way that we still don’t get along with the First Nations.

Q

Explain this significant moment in Canada:

Seven years war

A
  • first global war aka French Indian war that lasted 9 years in North America where Britain took over New France.
  • the British and French were most involved
  • happened in North America - Britain 1754-1763. And the collapse of Quebec was in Quebec City on the plains of Abraham.
  • this happened because of the industrial revolution and the increase in technology, population and empire (little resources). Also the fur trade was a cause of this as well because of the money disputes.
  • historical significance for canada because English took over French and the Quebec act which gave Quebec the right to elect their government along with the constitutional act that gave upper (Ontario) and lower (Quebec) canada province.
  • Canada has changed from this moment because even today English is more dominant over French.

Q

Explain this significant moment in Canada:

War of 1812

A
  • was an American attempt to take over British North America
  • those who were involved were America, British North America and First Nations (Canada and U.S.)
  • this happened in 1812 in Canada and the U.S.
  • this happened because of American expansionism (desire to end the Indian territory supported by British), the trade blockade ( British used navy to block American trade with France and Britain) and the napoleonic wars
  • this event has historical significance for Canada because it was a coming of age moment for Canada as it was the time when America invaded us and we didn’t lose
  • Canada has grown from this moment by coming together as one in alliance between British, French and First Nations with a common goal, being a constant American threat and failing to recognize the important role of the First Nations fighters

Q

Explain this significant moment in Canada:

Confederation

A
  • was the coming together of canadian colonies, in order to separate and become independent from Britain
  • canadian colonies, Britain and John a macdonald were all involved
  • this happened in upper (Ontario) and lower (Quebec) canada in 1867 as well as in Toronto as there was a riot there
  • this happened because of war of 1812 (Britain unreliable defending, U.S. Could not be trusted), the rebellions of 1837 (mainly on the need for responsible governments, although they failed the message was sent), lord Durham and act of union (assimilation proposed, province of Canada formed), economic vulnerability, imperial vulnerability (Canada was vulnerable to invasion), and the conferences of 1864 ( Quebec conference - region disagreed to centralism, Charlottetown conference - federal system agreed more upon but not by all)
  • historical significance to Canada because it was the birth of our nation
  • before Canada was made up of only 4 provinces and today we have grown so much as we have many more provinces

Q

Explain this significant moment in Canada:

Sovereignty

A
  • canada became a country separate from Britain, but was still not sovereign because the foreign policy was still controlled by the British. There was also many examples of sovereignty such as the boer war (1st overseas war) and WW1 (European conflict)
  • Canada and Britain were involved
  • happened in Canada in 1867 (1867-1918)
  • this happened because canada wanted to be self governing and carry out decisions without any external interference
  • historical significance for Canada as in WW1 due to our efforts in the war canada was granted more sovereignty following the war
  • we have developed from this moment by having control over foreign affairs, and joining the League of Nations, but we still can never truly be sovereign because of the laws
