A

Following WW1 if a canadian was jobless, homeless, or living “beneath the poverty line” it was viewed as a problem with that person

  • plenty of jobs and wealth available
  • any hardworking motivated person would have the type of job to allow them to live comfortable
  • “roaring 20s”
20
Q

Poverty - how and why did it change during no after the Great Depression?

A

  • hardworking, motivated people find themselves jobless, selling off their homes, and living “beneath the poverty line”

Poverty - Great Depression - solutions and political changes that followed + Saskatchewan impact

A
  • By viewing poverty as a societal problem, the government felt a responsibility to intervene to help people who wanted to contribute to society but couldn’t find work
  • tax money spent on social assistance, “busy work jobs” created (welfare system), women could be paid support for having children (economic downturn is population growth becoming stagnant)

-Saskatchewan impact: wheat pool created (1000s went bankrupt and nearly 250 000 people left the prairies for eastern Canada)
Creating of CCF, later changed name to New Democratic Party (NDP), tommy Douglas - universal healthcare

22
Q

Is Canada actually sovereign? Is true sovereignty even possible?

A

Yes

No, stuck under laws.

23
Q

War measures act - should a government ever have the power to suspend rights and freedoms?

A

Yes and no. Yes if our freedom is directly being threatened like in WW1 in the time of the holocaust and hitler. No if our freedom isn’t really being threatened like in WW2 when it was just in the European country and not us, and now no because we do not experience any terrorism.

24
Q

Describe one big idea or lesson you learned from canadian history that will help you better understand a relevant issue canada faces today.

A

Treaties
- learned how unfair it actually was for aboriginals then and now
- helped me understand more why First Nations are the way they are because of where we put them, never thought of reserves like Jewish camps
- we own all of the land they only got some
- treaties are they way they are because of the miscommunication between First Nations and Europeans and because of that they didn’t get what they truly wanted and promises weren’t quickly fulfilled
- we control the treaties, residential schools were terrible, were racist and have the Indian act which is a racist law that puts them down
- they in more poverty because of us - get paid less
I am more informed about aboriginals and treaties, helps me understand them and what issues they are currently going through and how I could maybe contribute by speaking out or even just by being more aware of the issues that go along with it
