FINAL- Outer Ear Disorders Flashcards
Congenital Malformations
- Preauricular Tags, Pits, Cysts
- Microtia
- Atresia
- Stenosis
Preauricular tags, pits, cysts
Small nodule or depression found anterior to the tragus/crus helix
Often dominant characteristics in families
Microtia
Small abnormally shaped or absent pinna/auricle
Accompanies atresia
can be unilateral
Atresia
Closure of external auditory canal
- osseous (bony)
- Unilateral
- Males
- Right Ear
- Conductive
Stenosis
Narrowing of the ear canal cartilage without total closure
Syndromes
Treacher Collins Syndrome
Crouzan Syndrome
Treacher Collins Syndrome
Maldevelopment of facial & middle ear bones
- microtia
- atresia
- conductive loss
Crouzan
Marked abnormalities in skull shape that occur when the bones of skull fuse together too early in development
- low pinna
- stenosis/atresia
- maldeformed TM
- maldeformed ossicles/ossicular fixation
Inflammatory Disorders
- Acute External Otitis
- Exostoses
- Osteoma
- Carcinoma
- Impacted Cerumen
Acute External Otitis
swimmer’s ear
Diffuse bacterial infection of the ear canal
- pain, itching, pressure & hearing loss
- canal is red & swollen
- treat with antibiotics
Exostoses
Bony growth, usually bilateral arising from repeated stimulation by cold water
usually multiple growths with broad base
Osteoma
Relatively rare, benign tumors, consisting of bone
often asymtomatic
Carcinoma
Benign or malignant tumor
Impacted Cerumen
Caused by use of cotton swabs
- Difficulty hearing on affected side
- Mild Conductive
Treatment Options
SoundBite Hearing System
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid
Reconstructive Surgery
SoundBite Hearing System
Non surgical, removable bone conduction (teeth)
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid
Surgically implanted or removable with headband conduction device
Reconstructive Surgery
After age 6
Cartilage from rib cage
Surgery 2 to 4 stages
