FINAL - Middle Ear Disorders Flashcards
Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
Ventilation Deficiency
Patulous ET
Ventilation Deficiency
Obstruction or narrowing of the Eustachian Tube
- Lead to chronic negative ear pressure
- Otitis Media
Patulous ET
When Eustachian Tube seems permanently open. Older adults
Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Audiological Results
May show up Type C (negative peak pressure)
Mild Conductive
Otitis Media
Duration?
What age group does it affect most?
Treatment?
Inflammation of middle ear tissue. Often accompanied by fluid and infection.
- Common in children
- Effusion: Fluid or mucous from ME tissue
- Duration (Acute 0-21 days, Recurrent 22 days-8 weels, Chronic > 8 weeks
- Treated with antibiotics or myringotomy
Otitis Media Audiological Results
Type of HL?
Word Recognition?
Type B (flat)
Mild conductive to PT
WR is excellent when presented above the conductive loss
Cholesteatoma
Define
Common in what age?
Accumulation of skin in wrong places of middle ear
- Congenital or acquired
- Common in adolescents/teens but can be seen in adults
Cholesteatoma Audiological Results
- Type ___ tympanogram
- Unilateral? Bilateral?
- SNHL? Conductive?
- Word Recognition?
Type B
Unilateral
Conductive
WR 92%
Osteosclerosis
Define
Pathology
Treatment
Hereditary disorder of middle ear bones & middle ear bony cavity
Build up of spongy bone, resulting in Stapes Fixation
Treated non surgically by hearing aid
or
surgically by a Stapedectomy
Stapedectomy
Incus & stapes are separated
opening in stapes footplate and prosthesis is inserted
Otosclerosis Audiologic Results
Unilateral/bilateral conductive
normal/reduced admittance, Type As
Acoustic Reflexis- normal during early stages
elevated/absent later
Gradual onset of HL
