Jelly Roll Morton
One of the first great jazz composers and pianists, this man did an important series of interviews with the Lomaxes, documenting his role in early Jazz. A Creole from New Orleans, he often included ragtime and Caribbean elements in his music. Self-proclaimed “inventor of Jazz”
Louis Armstrong
Perhaps the most beloved jazz musician of all time, this great cornet/trumpet player and singer is known for his virtuosity and creativity. He appeared in Broadway shows, movies, on radio, did live performances, and led a band.
Duke Ellington
Known for his poise, this great composer and pianist helped jazz acquire a sophisticated reputation. He wrote over 2000 pieces, both short and long works, and led a band for 50 years.
Charlie “Bird” Parker
A founder of Bebop, this alto saxophone player greatly influenced other musicians and Beatniks in general. Sadly, he died young of a heroin addiction, a trait that would also be all to often copied.
Dizzie Gillespie
A founder of Bebop, this trumpeter was known for bringing Caribbean influences into jazz. He did many recordings and live performances.
Miles Davis
This composer and trumpeter started out in Bebop, then went on to help create Cool Jazz. His album “Kind of Blue” is considered one of the greatest of all jazz albums.
Thelonious Monk
A jazz pianist and composer with a sparse, percussive style, this musician was confident in his style, even if it took a long time for his skill to be recognized.
Little Richard
Known for flamboyant performances, punding, keyboard riffs, falsetto singing. Use 12-bar blues format as foundation. Heavily influenced R&R, Rock, Soul, Funk, and R&B
Chuck Berry
“Godfather of the guitar” Helped Solidify the R&R style with teen aimed lyrics, guitar solos, flashy performances. Recorded for Chess records.
Elvis Presley
Fan of all music styles. Started recording and touring on the country scene, pioneered “Rockabilly”. Live performances, TV, Movies, 20th century icon.
Bob Dylan
Folk revival artist who wrote songs for civil rights movements. Idolized Woody Guthrie. Performed at the march on Washington.
Pete Seeger
Joined guthrie touring the country. Popularized folk songs. Founded the Almanac Singers with Guthrie, Lee Hays, and Millard Lampell.
John and Alan Lomax
This father/son team documented folk music from the early jazz greats (such as Jelly Roll Morton) to the folk singers of the 1930’s-1960’s including Woodie Guthrie and LeadBelly. They made a large and important archive for the Library of Congress.
Leadbelly
“King of the 12 string Guitar” Real name is Huddie Ledbetter. Was a giant figure in American folk music that led to a folk revival in the 1950’s
Dick Dale
Guitarist and surfer of Lebanese heritage. Pioneer of surf music. Experimented with reverb and used loud amps. Added Mexican and Arabic influences.
