Final Lung ppt!! Flashcards
what are the 2 major types of lung cancer?
small cell lung cancer
non-small cell lung cancer
describe small cell lung cancer
cells have very little cytoplasm (making them small), so they become densely compressed into a mass. These masses are generally centrally located near the hilum w/ lymphatic and distant metastases that develop before dx.
most common in smokers
describe non-small cell cancer
85% of all lung cancers
metastases in brain, bone, and liver
what are the 3 types of non-small cell tumors?
squamous cell carcinoma (25-30%)-passageway cells
adenocarcinoma (40%)- lung periphery cells
large cell- anywhere in the lung and grows rapidly.
What are the damaged areas and a few s/s of Pancoast tumors?
lesions of the thoracic outlet>brachial plexus and cervical sympathetic nerves
severe shoulder pain, hand and arm atrophy, Horner syndrome, blood vessel compression
How are lung cancers treated?
surgical resection (not small-cell)
radiation
chemotherapy
what is postthrombotic syndrome?
s/s of chronic venous insufficiency post-DVT; include pain and swelling
what are the risk factors for postthrombotic syndrome?
anatomically extensive DVT
recurrent ipsilateral DVT
persistent leg symptoms 1 month out from acute DVT
Obesity
older age
what are the adverse effects of corticosteroids?
proximal muscle weakness
hyperglycemia
osteoporosis
skin thinning/easy bruising
impaired wound healing
swelling (moon face)
what are the PT concerns post lung-transplant?
pts are poorly conditioned
wound management
slow progression/improvement
exercise/ functional activity
