FInal Junk! Flashcards
Why do we fast animals before measuring blood glucose?
To avoid lipemia
Why would we not want to fast an animal before measuring BG?
The animal is showing signs of hypoglycemia
What species is particularly susceptible to hyperglycemia due to excitement?
Cats.
Don’t mistake it for DM (differentiate w/ fructosamine test)
What are the sources of BG?
Intestinal absorption (except ruminants) Hepatic production Kidney production (minor)
Where is insulin secreted from?
Pancreatic islet beta cells
Insulin net result on BG:
Increased utilization
Decreased synthesis
How does insuling lower BG?
Promotes tissue uptake
Inhibits liver gluconeogenesis
Promotes liver glycogen storage
Glucocorticoid net result on BG:
Decreased utilization
Increased synthesis
How do glucocorticoids increase BG?
Promote gluconeogenesis
Inhibit insulin binding
Inhibit insulin action
What is the most common reason for hyperglycemia?
Glucocorticoids
Catecholamine net result on BG:
Decreased utilization
Increased synthesis
How do catecholamines increase BG?
Increase hepatic glycogenolysis
Inhibit insulin secretion
Stimulate glucagon secretion
Inhibit insulin action
Glucagon net result on BG:
Decreased utilization
Increased synthesis
How does glucagon increase BG?
Increases hepatic gluconeogenesis
Increases hepatic glycogenolysis
Inhibits insulin binding
Inhibits insulin action
GH net result on BG:
Decreased utilization
Increased synthesis
