In 1963, Singapore was part of Malaya - which led to creation of Malaysia. Singapore was kicked out because Malaysia was afraid of Lee Kuan Yew’s growing influence. This worked out for Yew because he was afraid of being surrounded by Malays. 1965, Singapore was expelled and Malaysia kept its name.

Important because the literature has largely argued that ASEAN has done well in terms of creating peace and security in the region

Comprises of 10 countries in region - Timor isn’t a part of it because it’s seen as economically incapable of attending meetings

Idea was to establish regional stability thru economic cultural cooperation

informality and consensus-building — the two key aspects of ASEAN way
Norm of non-interference
Linked the idea of sovereignty. Most important doctrine. Central to post-colonial states, articulating independence, and securing borders. This is the one that matters to leaders.
