Q

Why is it not necessary to struggle with conditions?

A

[11.3]
Because conditions flow from an inner effect outwardly, and as in we change our inner state the expressed condition changes.

Q

According to Deepak Chopra, what is the ideal relationship between movement and stillness? How does Ernest Holmes express this same concept?

A

[11.3. Creative Mind and Success 40.2]
When stillness and movement are combined it allows a person to unleash their creativity in all directions. Wherever the power of their attention takes them.

Ernest Holmes expresses the concept as God can only do for us what we allow him to do through us. Intelligence gives us ideas, and in turn we work on them.

According to Deepak, they exist in combination. Stillness alone is potential for creativity; movement alone is creatively restricted to certain aspects. In combination, they allow unlimited creativity and creative expression.
According to Holmes, intelligence / silence gives us ideas; work / action allows us to manifest them.

Q

Why can we not treat the other person when one partner reports conflict within that relationship?

A

The only consciousness you can change is your own. We don’t know the desires of another person. We don’t know if the other person wants to change. You are what you want. What do you need, this is your time?

We do not treat without permission. We cannot change others. We can’t know a third party is open to change. We treat for the person in front of us.

Holmes seems to present a dead end when he says, “We really affirm only that which we know to be true; we know that to be true which we have experience within ourselves. What is the solution?

A

[Creative Mind and Success, Mental Likeness p.74.1]
It is herein that we see the necessity of providing within a greater concept of life; a bigger idea of ourselves and a more expanded concept of the Universe in which we live, move and have our being. This is a matter of inner growth together with the enlarging of all lines of thought and activity.

Race-Suggestion (Thought) are the human beliefs operating through the mentality of the individual. The tendency to reproduce what the race has thought and experienced. The race-suggestion is a prolific source of disease. These accumulated subjective tendencies of the human race are operative through any person who is receptive to them.

[from practice exam] The accumulated, subjective tendencies and thoughts of the human race, which tend to show up as individual experience, unless other beliefs are consciously chosen. The beliefs held by a group, culture or the entire human race.

The way to protect oneself from it is by knowing that it cannot operate through him; by knowing that he cannot be affected by suggestion.

Q

What does Butterworth mean when he says, “The Universe owes you a living!”

A

[Ch.1, p.23]
You see the basis of entitlement is the startling assertion: The Universe owes you a living! Yes, we are saying owes you a living. Note: We are not saying the world owes you a living. Actually, the world owes you nothing. You are a creative expression of the Universe, with the responsibility to let your light shine. Thus you owe the world a life. But in many ways in which you apply yourself in the world, the Universe owes you complete support.

Law of Reciprocity.

Butterworth gives several definitions of faith. From these and other studies you have done, write your personal definition of faith.

A

Faith = Action in synchronicity with spiritual truth
[p. 40] All things are possible, your faith is the key to the kingdom of the power within you to apply the laws that transcend human limitation.
[SOM Glossary]
Faith is a mental attitude, so inwardly embodied that the mind can no longer deny it. Faith is complete when it is both a conscious and subjective acceptance. Faith may be consciously generated. In spiritual terminology, faith means a belief in the presence of an invisible principle and law which directly and specifically responds to us.

Q

What is the Practitioner’s role in healing?

A

31
Q

How do emotions affect our growth and evolution?

A

Emotions are “mental energy set in motion through feeling” (SOM Glossary 588.6) and they are an expression of our feelings that have been triggered by a belief. When our emotions are out of balance and chaotic they can impact our physical health through illness and dis-ease. When our emotions are in balance and in alignment with Spirit, they can motivate us to have a more fulfilling life and develop a greater spiritual awareness. [Workbook 18-4]

32
Q

Are “positive” and “negative” emotions good and bad?

A

Yes. Even though “negative” emotions are based in distorted beliefs they can have a “positive” or “good” influence in our experience if those emotions are a catalyst for growth and awareness of Truth.

33
Q

Why is that to change a pattern of anger, or other limiting emotion, we cannot accomplish it by simply treating to eliminate the pattern?

A

Treating the pattern alone does not get to the core causative belief that is at the root of the limiting emotion, which is the effect.

34
Q

What spiritual principle would you use when working with a client who is substance addicted?

A

At the root of addiction is a belief in separation from God, and that God is not sufficient to meet all needs. The spiritual principle to work with is Oneness with God, and the unlimited Abundance of Source.

35
Q

Is it the Practitioner’s job to take away the pain of grief? Explain your answer.

A

[WkBk 19-5.4]

No. The Practitioner is not responsible for the healing, but is responsible for declaring the Truth.

36
Q

Explain what Alan Wolfelt meant by companioning. Why is it important?

A

[WkBk 19-12]
Wolfelt’s companioning model is based on what he refers to as the “teach me” model, which is about learning and observing from the grieving client. As opposed to dragging the suffering client through a pre-existing track of treatments. Companioning is not about “analyzing, fixing or resolving” the client’s grief. It is about being totally present, providing a safe space for the client to go through the grieving process. Wolfelt goes further to suggest it is like being a “guardian angel”.

Companioning is an important strategy because it creates a safe, compassionate space for the client to “embrace their feelings of profound loss”. During a time of loss the client is given someone who is there for them and their unique experience.

37
Q

What are some of the gifts of grief and mourning?

A

[WkBk 19-9]

  • It can bring the gift of compassion for self and others.
  • It can be a call to action, within one’s personal life and/or larger world.
  • It can transform pain into a deeper appreciation for life.
  • It can reveal previously unrecognized strength and creativity.
  • It can lead one to a deeper spiritual exploration. To question their relationship with God and the meaning of life.
38
Q

“The patient was healed; the patient died.” Is this an incongruous statement?

A

No, this is not an incongruous statement within the Science of Mind philosophy. It refers to the idea that even if the patient’s physical body dies, there can be a spiritual healing of the mind before their soul leaves the body.

39
Q

What does it mean to be non-resistant to life? What are the benefits?

A

[WkBk 19-6.5,19-7]
“Non-resistance to life” is a lesson from the knowing of Oneness and Wholeness. This is to know that all life is One; and God is expressing Itself through living creatures for the greater good of all. And we are part of this ever evolving expression of Spirit.

The benefits of recognizing Oneness and adopting a non-resistance to life means no matter what circumstances we might find ourselves in, there is something to learn, and we can have the confidence to open ourselves to what is. When we resist what we are experiencing, any challenges will only multiply. When we accept what is and embrace the flow of Life we magnify our ability to take right action.

40
Q

What are some warning signs that someone may be at risk of suicide?

A

I noticed you have been talking a lot about “not mattering to anyone” and giving away the things you value. Have you been thinking about hurting yourself?

42
Q

Are there any ways that suicide survivor grief may be different from grief after other deaths? If so, what might they be?

A

[WkBk 20-11]
Yes, suicide survivors can experience grief differently than other types of death. Suicide survivors often struggle with making meaning from the suicide and trying to understand why it occured. Sometimes they feel more guilt and responsibility than other mourners, questioning if they contributed to the death in some way. They may also experience a more intense sense of abandonment, asking “How could they have done this to me?”
