What is a signal phrase?
are introductory words to a summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation from another writer’s work on your paper.
What does a signal phrase usually include? And what is its purpose?
includes the name of the author and their credentials. the purpose is to help distinguish between your ideas and those of a source.
What type of verbs should be used in a signal phrase?
present or perfect present tense. the verbs must support your argument/claim and how you want the reader to see the source.
What are dropped quotations?
are quotations with no SP. Automatically transition to a quotation without providing context.
What is the basic format of a SP?
Author’s name+ credentials+ verb+ “ + quoted materials+ “ + citation+ period.
What should you do the first time you mention a source?
include the author’s name and credentials to establish authority
How should summaries/paraphrases be introduced?
with a SP that names the author and places the material in the context of the arugment.
Do you need SPs when mentioning statics?
no, it is not needed
What should you mention in a SP if there is no author?
use the title of the source
Describe the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing.
summarizing- condensing the source’s information by using your own words. it is used to briefly go over main points and ideas, compare two arguments from two different sources, or to provide readers with an understanding of an argument before responding to it.
Paraphrasing- writing using your own words and sentence structure, The Author’s exact words are not needed. Use a signal phrase and a citation.
What are ellipses marks and when to use them?
. . .= indicate an omiison of words. thier purpose is to condense info. Must be garmmatically coreect.
What should you do if you want to leave out a full senwetnce or more?
use a period before the ellipses.
When should you not use an ellipses and what is the only exception?
you shouldn’t use an ellipeses in the begening or end. The only exception is when you dropped words at the end of the final quoted sentence. In this case you would put the elises before the “ and the ()
What are brackets used for?
allow you to insert you rown words into quoted material for clarifcation or for grammatical accuracy.
what should you do to indicate error in a quoted material?
insert teh word sic in brackets after the error.
