Q

Columbus Quote

A

This quote exemplifies Columbus’s perception of Indigenous people, specifically Arawak people. All the arawak people emerged from their villages to greet Columbus as he had arrived in a large boat carrying swords. This is significant because instead of genuinely acknowledging how remarkable the Arawak people were, he instead made fun of them for cutting themselves with his swords. Instead of noticing the skills and talent that they had, he thinks about how he can enslave them and use them for his own economical gain. In fact as soon as he arrived in the indies, he forcefully imprisoned some of the arawak people and forced them to give him information. “Where is the gold?”
