Categories
The knowledge we have is organized in categories in our minds, and these categories differ from culture to culture
Learning a culture is a process of learning what its people know
Finding categories
Look for a common name or response to an array of objects or events
Find the distinguishing characteristics of a category
“What kind of thing is —–?”
“What are some other things like —–?”
What is culture?
Culture is more about what people think than what they do
Belief systems and values are the essence of any culture
Beliefs: true vs. false
Values: good vs. bad
Message and feedback
Both sender and receiver have a knowledge bank - the speaker reflects, the receiver interprets
Communication isn’t complete until the receiver has understood and integrated new information into their knowledge bank
To communicate in a second culture at a deeper level…
Know how the people’s minds work as well as how the language works. You will be interpreted and evaluated in terms of their system of knowledge, not yours
Two fronts of cultural awareness
- Understand your second culture
- Be insightfully aware of your first culture
American belief systems
Democratic: equality in dignity and worth
Work belief: equal opportunity and fair wage for all
Free-enterprise: importance of capital and land
