Mental Status Examination (MSE)
Name the seven components of the MSE.
1) Appearance and attitude towards examiner - overall dress (does it make sense for the weather outside, etc.), cleanliness, facial expressions; cooperative, mute, hostile, paranoid, or withdrawn
2) Activity - motor, fidgety, overactive, under active
3) Speech and language
- Abnormal = blocking, thought blocking, circumstantial speech, tangential speech, preservation, flight of ideas, mutism
4) Mood and Affect
- Affect = prevailing emotional tone; flat (no expressional change), labile, blunted
- Mood = more sustained feelings
5) Thought and perceptual disturbances - delusions, obsessions, compulsions, thought broadcasting, hallucinations, illusions
6) Neuropsychiatric evaluation - assessing sensorium (level of consciousness)
7) Insight and Judgement
