where do we get our code of ethics as pharmacists?
Oath of a pharmacist
APhA code of ethics (code provision II) - ‘promote the good of every patient in a caring, compassionate, and confidential manner’
There is a lot of grey area in ethics, what are some ways you can help determine the best course of action?
follow:
-the law
-company policy
-morality
–3 theories (utilitarianism, liberal individualism, and deontology)
Utilitarianism
-the greatest good for the greatest number of people
-how can I help the most amount of people
-‘most’ is not all
Deontology
-What is inherently right or wrong?
-Is it wrong to possibly harm a few to save many?
-Do the ends justify the means?
Liberal individualism
-individual rights
-you are providing a service to people, it is their right to accept or deny that service
-you are ‘obligated’ to provide the treatment requested
Autonomy
-respect for persons affirms that each person has moral value and dignity in his or her own right
-autonomy is a two-way street
-can be thought of as ‘self determination’
