Final Exam Aquatics Flashcards
1
Q
How does percentage of BW change with immersion level?
A
hip- 50% BW
chest- 33% BW
neck- 10% BW
2
Q
What are the magic numbers for water temp?
A
25 - 37 degrees Celcius
25 = hard to maintain core warmth during immersed exercise 37 = hard to cool yourself off because you can't sweat
3
Q
How do you gauge exercise intensity during aquatic exercise?
A
- HR intensity is 7-20 bpm lower for full body immersion
- RPE is special for beginners because they will think it is harder that it is aerobically
- talk test
4
Q
How do you progress intensity for resistance exercise in aquatic environment?
A
increase surface area of speed to increase resistance
5
Q
Properties of Water and Why are They Important
A
- buoyancy- decreases BW, buoyancy assisted, resisted, super resisted
- viscosity- make movement harder by increasing surface area or speed or both
- surface tension- hard to break so activity at surface is harder rather than under water
- hydrostatic pressure- don’t want to put someone with compromised heart or lungs in water because system isn’t good enough to overcome pressure, good for swelling/edema, comforting and soothing
