Interactive Listening
Filtering out the distractions, focusing on the speaker(s), & showing that you’re paying attention.
External Noise
External distractions including: street noise, flashy visual aid left up during a presentation, or chattering audience members.
Internal Noise
Internal distractions are any thoughts making it difficult for you to concentrate.
Demographics
Audience members characteristics including: age, gender, gender composition, sexual & religious orientation, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, & political affiliation.
Situational Audience Analysis
A quick audience analysis before or during a speech, to be conducted if the makeup of an audience is different from what the speaker expected, or if the audience is lost, confused, or hostile.
Creditability
An audience perception that a speaker is well prepared & qualified to speak on their topic.
Objectivity
A quality of credible sources by which they avoid bias- that is partisanship & prejudice.
Statistics
A piece of data or information presented in numerical form.
Evidence
Information gathered from credible sources that helps support the speaker’s claims.
Hierarchy of Needs
A theory that divides human needs into 5 basic levels & emphasizes that people’s most basic needs must be met before they’ll focus on less essential ones.
