What are three sexual relationship patterns in adulthood?
- Single-hood - This is increasing with more people consciously choosing to be single. This is a trend of extended youth.
- Cohabitation - According to research people who cohabitate are more likely to get divorced. 84% Canadians approve of cohabitation.
- Marriage - Most people in every known society get married. Every known society has marriage. Under Paul Martins leadership in 2004 gay marriage became legal.
What is serial monogyny?
- Serial Monogyny - Where you are committed but not married. May not last, after a year decisions are usually made. Where do we go with this? Often happens over and over again with different relationships.
What are three reasons to decide to be celibate?
- Religious reasons - sex is only within the context of marriage
- STD’s - especially HIV/AIDS
- Moral reasons - personal code of conduct (not religious)
What are three ideas in the sexual revolution?
Sexual revolution occurred in the 1960-80’s. Overlaps with second wave feminism. Same time as the introduction of the birth control pill.
1. Taboos against sexual activity were relaxed
2. Relaxed and accepting view of homosexuality
3. Oral contraception

- Expectation for privacy
2. Restriction of sexual activity during menstruation as well as some stages of pregnancy and after childbirth

- Most Canadians accept the fact that their spouse will not be a virgin
- Only 18% say that their ideal spouse will be a virgin
- 3/4 of Canadians say their spouse will have some sexual experience but not too much.

What are two focus’ of information about sex in 1970 - 80?
- 1970’s - curbing teen pregnancy, this was the focus and purpose of sex ed.
- !980’s - Evolved to HIV/AIDS, safe sex…underlying theme of both was harm reduction
What is the access to sex education across the country?
Access is uneven across the country. Not everyone believes that sex education should be taught (usually religious groups). In Alberta, if you are going to talk about sex, religion or sexual orientation you must send a letter home to parents giving them the options to remove their child from the class. There is no uniform sex ed curriculum in Canada.
How are sexual health professionals trained?
No uniform training in the area of sex ed.
- Under training is often a critique
- Post-secondary courses in sexuality are very uneven in content and availability.
What are sexual dysfunctions?
Sexual dysfunctions can be experienced by people as everything from an inconvenience, to an annoyance, to a profound challenge to ones identity, emotional well-being, and marriage or relationship.
