Final Exam Flashcards
Transverse Cord Lesion
All sensory and motor pathways are either partially or completely interrupted
Causes: Trauma, Tumor, MS, Transverse Myelitis
Hemicord Lesions (Brown-Sequard Syndrome)
Ipsilateral UMN weakness (lateral corticospinal tract damage)
Ipsilateral loss of sense for vibration and proprioception (PCML damage)
Contralateral loss of pain and temp (ALS damage)
Causes: MS, trauma
Central Cord Syndrome (small lesions)
Bilateral regions of sensory loss to pain and temp (damage to spinothalamic fibers crossing ventral commissure)
Central Cord Syndrome (large sessions)
LMN deficits at level of lesion (Damage to anterior horn)
Affected corticospinal tracts cause UMN signs and PCML involvement
Causes: SC contusion, tumor, non-traumatic or post-traumatic event, syringomyelia
Posterior Cord Syndrome
Loss of vibration and proprioception (PCML damage)
Larger lesions - UMN weakness (damage to lateral corticospinal tracts)
Causes: Trauma, compression from tumor, MS, vitamin b12 deficiency, and tabes dorsalis
Anterior Cord Syndrome
Loss of pain and temp below level of lesion (ALS damage)
LMN weakness at level of lesion (damage to anterior horn)
Larger lesions - UMN sings (damage to lateral corticospinal tracts)
Causes: Trauma, MS, anterior spinal artery infarct
