Properties: Rayon
TYPE OF FIBRE
**VISCOSE FIBRES: Man-made textiles
**🙋🙋🏻
✅✅✅Desirable properties:
✅Absorbant, thus
✅Easy to colour
✅Comfortable to wear
✅Abrasion resistant
✅Does not build up static electricity
Undesirable properties:
👎Can’t be bleached
👎Weakens when wet – stretches and shrinks
👎Not resilient, creases easily
Uses: rayon
👗 Clothes
🛋️ Furnishing fabrics
Care & maintenance: rayon
🗨️Wash carefully
🗨️Luke warm water, by hand
🗨️Iron at moderate temperatures to prevent scorch marks
**Manufacturing: viscose fibres **
* Chemical processing of cellulose
* Non-toxic chemical amine dissolves cellulose
* Spin long filaments
* Sometimes filaments are cut into short lengths to form spun yarns
Natural fibres
From 🐑 animal or plant 🌱
🌱Plant fibres consist of organic compound: cellulose.
🐑 Animal fibres/protein fibres consist of strings of protein-based animal hair.
Plant fibres/cellulose fibres
💧All plant fibres are absorbant
🎨 Easily absorbs dyes because it consists of cellulose
Cotton
TYPE OF FIBRE
Natural plant fibre🌱 - Made from the inside of the seed husk of the cotton plant
✅✅✅Desirable properties:
✅ Durable & strong
✅ 💧Absorbs moisture and releases it
✅ Good conductor of heat – wearer stays cool
✅ Does not build up static electricity
Undesirable properties:
👎Little resilience and elasticity – creases and shrinks easily
👎🔥 Not flame resistant – burns easily
👎Mildew: fungus which grows on cotton when it is left damp
Uses
Versatile
Various colours, weights & textures
Reasonably priced
Finish can be applied to make more crease resistant
Examples of uses of cotton?
👗 Summer-weight clothing
🛏️ Bed linen
Towels
Cutains
Tea towels
Care & maintenance
🗨️Wash in machine
🗨️Can resist high temperature: can tumble dry & iron.
🗨️Resistant to alkalis – can use any cleaning agent.
🗨️Can be bleached.
🗨️Easier to iron while slightly damp.
🗨️Colour fades if left in direct sunlight.
Wool
TYPE OF FIBRE
🐑Natural animal fibre🐑
Short staple fibre
From shorn sheep’s hair (wool)
E.g. Mohair or camel hair
✅✅✅Desirable properties:
✅🧯Flame retardant – does not burn easily
✅Good elasticity and resilience – does not wrinkle easily
✅ 💧Absorbent & water repellent
✅Good insulator – keeps heat in 🥵 & cold out 🥶
Undesirable properties:
👎Allergenic – could cause allergies for same people
👎🐜Prone to insect attacks
👎Yellows with prolonged sun exposure
👎Not very strong – weaker when wet
👎Damaged by alkali’s – have to use special detergent
👎Stretches or shrinks if not handled carefully
Uses:
🧣 Mostly winter clothing
🕴️Suits
Ideal for curtains that don’t hang in direct sunlight
Blankets & carpets
Care & maintenance:
🗨️Wash with care:
🗨️Tepid water, handwash, special detergent
🗨️Do not rub or pull (stretches & felts)
🗨️Dry flat
🗨️Store carefully, away from sunlight and insects
Silk
TYPE OF FIBRE
🐛Natural animal fibre🐛
Made by caterpillar of silk moth
South African: mopani silk from mopani worms
One long continuous filament (only natural filament)
✅✅✅Desirable properties:
✅Very resilient – does not wrinkle easily
✅ Does not loose shape when washed
✅ 💧💧Very absorbent
✅ Slightly elastic
Undesirable properties:
👎 Poor conductor – builds up static electricity
👎 🐜Attacked by insects (protein fibre)
👎 Not strong or durable – damaged by sunlight & bleach
Uses:
Large variety of textures and weights.
👰Usually expensive, mostly clothing for special functions
Also: curtains & special furnishing & finishes.
Care & maintenance:
🗨️Washing:
* by hand
* lightly soapy water
* do NOT wring out
🗨️Do not hang in sunlight
🗨️Iron at low temperature while slightly damp
🗨️Dry-cleaning preferred
How is silk produced?
🐛 Caterpillar spins cocoon around itself
Cocoons are boiled to loosen gummy residue keeping fibres together
Filaments unspooled to form raw silk fibres
Damaged fibres are cut up & spun together to form spun silk
Spun silk not as strong as raw silk fibres
Bamboo
TYPE OF FIBRE
🙋VISCOSE🙋🙋🏻
*Viscose fabric is made from wood pulp from trees like eucalyptus, bamboo and others. Bamboo viscose really describes how bamboo is processed and turned into a workable fabric.
*
✅✅✅Desirable properties:
✅ Highly absorbant
✅ Dries quickly
✅ Strong, not affected by sunlight
✅ Good isolator – warm in winter, cool in summer
✅ Good anti-microbal properties, kills bacteria
✅ Anti-allergenic
Uses:
Versatile
Suitable for underwear
Surgical clothing, masks and bandages
Care & maintenance:
🗨️Machine washable
🗨️ Iron on warm to hot temperatures
