Q

Population Numbers:

A

Population number change over time, influenced by births, deaths and migration into and out of the area. The world’s population has increased over time and it is estimated that the world’s population will continue to increase into the future.

Q

Problems with Ageing Populations-

A
  • Pressure on Heath Care
  • A need for care homes
  • More pensions needed
  • Fewer economically active (less people of working age).
  • Less tax as there are less people working therefore less people to pay tax.

Q

Problems with youthful populations-

A
  • More schools needed.
  • In the future, these children will be parents, leading to more strain on health services.
  • Fewer people working.
  • Less tax as there are less people working and therefore less people paying tax.

16
Q

Renewable Energy;

A

Renewable energy is energy that is infinite and will never run out.

17
Q

Renewable resources;

A

Wind power
Solar power
Hydroelectric power
Geothermal power

18
Q

Advantages of Renewable energy;

A

Supply is infinite
They use the natural environment to generate electricity eg: wind, water, heat
Sustainable forms of energy are generated.
Do not give off harmful gases.

19
Q

Disadvantages of Renewable energy;

A

Wind turbines can look unsightly.
Cost a lot
Building dams for hydroelectric power can flood the land around it.
Renewable energy sources cannot be used in every environment. Wind turbines are better on higher land where there is more wind.

20
Q

The Brandt line-

A

The Brandt line divides the world into the Rich north and Poor South.

21
Q

The Rich north-

A

The rich north consume a high amount of fossil fuels in factories, cars and heating homes etc. The Rich North now use more renewable resources as fossil fuels are starting to run out. They are able to afford the design and manufacturing of wind turbines or solar panels.

22
Q

The Poor south-

A

Many countries in the Poor South use natural materials to produce energy such as wood but now many countries are becoming more developed (rich) and are using fossil fuels more often. This means that fossil fuels are being used at a quicker rate.

23
Q

Using too many fossil fuels-

A

When we burn fossil fuels we add to the blanket of carbon and other harmful gases in the atmosphere. This traps more of the Suns energy leading to higher temperatures. This is called Global Warming.

24
Q

The greenhouse effect

A

Solar energy from the sun passes through the atmosphere.
Some of the energy is reflected back out into space.
Earth’s surface is heated by the sun and radiates heat back into space.
Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap some of the heat.

25
Q

Acting sustainably:

A

This means we take care over the amount of resources we use so we don’t run out or damage the environment for future generations.

26
Q

Individual Actions-

A

Waking, cycling, taking the bus rather that driving.
Recycling waste products so they can be used again.
Reuse plastic bags and plastic bottles to reduce oil use.
Switching off electrical appliances after use.
Buying locally produced items to reduce air miles.

27
Q

National/Global actions;

A

Making non-petrol using cars to reduce the amount of oil used.
Insulating homes to reduce the use of central heating.
Building more wind farms to produce renewable energy.
Solar panels at lower costs.
