Final Flashcards
Applied Research
Designed for the purpose of increasing our knowledge about a particular real-world problem.
This type of research is to increase our knowledge about human behavior and mental process
Basic Research
This research is placed within the confines of a laboratory, applied research normally outside the lab, in clinics, in social service agencies, in jails, and in business settings
Basic Research
There are two features of applied research
Studies clearly focus on easily recognizable problems
To further our knowledge of basic knowledge of basic psychological processes
Are there for Basic and Applied research and if so what are they?
Some basic occurs in the field and some applied takes place in a lab.
What is the “equity theory” core premise?
when judging the quality of any interaction with another person, we weight the relative contribution we make with the relative gain that we receive from the other person.
(if the costs and benefits are out of whack we perceive the situation to be inequitable and are motivated to restore the equity balance.)
Example:
In a Marriage with both partners working full-time, the wife might perceive an inequity if most household chores are her responsibility. She might then initiate various procedures (e.g. negotiation) to restore equity.
Equity Theory
The original Cognitive Interview was by who and what type of research was it?
Edward Geisielman and Ronald Fisher
Basic
Fisher et al., 1989 was what type of research
Applied
Police department officers and control group
used real victims and witnesses of crime
What was the IV, levels, and DV in the Fisher et al., 1989 Study (applied research)
IV: time of interviews
Levels: (2) Before and After training
DV: Number if facts elicited per interview
Hollingworth 1991 study:
Coca-Cola
Applied Research
Describe how Hollingworth was able to use fairly sophisticated methodological controls in his applied study of the effects of caffeine.
1.) Repeated Measures Design
Order effects were controlled through COUNTERBALANCING
2.) PLACEBO CONTROL
3.) DOUBLE BLIND
How did Hollingworth use counterbalancing?
Participants N=16 rotated among five different rooms in the apt, completing a series of tests in each room, in which part. were tested in the rooms was randomized.
How did Hollingworth use a Placebo control?
4 groups= 1 placebo control + 3 caffeine groups
Each with a different dosage
Hence, examined caffeine effects and dosage effects
How did Hollingworth use a Double Blind
Part. dod not know if they were receiving caffeine or placebo and the experimenters in each room did not know if their subjects had taken caffeine or placebo.
