Line
Created when lines intersect or become joined.
Shape
Shapes that can easily be measured because they have consistent lines.
Geometric shapes
Shapes that are found in nature or to be things that resemble nature.
Organic shapes
Any edge or line you can see on, in, or around a thing or shape.
Contour
The main object.
Positive shapes
Around the main object.
Negative shapes
Refers to the lines that give you information about the structure of what you are drawing.
Structural line drawing
Three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width, and depth.
Form
What you are able to see of a circle based on your vantage-point.
Ellipse
A type of art whose subject is a group of natural objects.
Still Life
The ratio between the size of an object and its model or representation.
Scale
the scale of the objects within your drawing in relationship to each other.
Proportion
The lightness or darkness of something.
Value
The representation of light and shadows on objects in a realistic manner.
Light Logic
The lightest value which is in the direct light and should be the only part of your paper left completely white.
Highlight
the light grays that are the transition between the light and the core shadow. These are also called halftones.
Midtones
the darkest shadow on the object
Core Shadow
the light found in the shadow reflected from a surface or another source
Reflected light
the shadow cast by the object
Cast Shadow
Formed by the variation within a pattern.
Rhythm
Means that both sides of something look the same or that they mirror each other.
Symmetry
The surface quality [of an object] that can be seen and felt.
Visual Texture
The name of a color from the color wheel.
Hue
Red, yellow and blue. These are the hues that cannot be mixed.
Primary Color
This is a group of three colors – orange, violet and green - that are mixed from the three primary colors.
Secondary Color
This is a group of six colors that occurs when a primary and a secondary color are mixed.
Tertiary Color
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.; red/green, blue/orange, yellow/violet
Complementary Color
Red, yellow, orange, red-orange, yellow, orange. (pink, maroon, peach, etc.)
Warm Colors
Blue, green, violet, blue-violet, blue-green. (teal, navy blue, lavender, etc.)
Cool Colors
A way of representing distance and things going back in space in a visually accurate way.
Perspective
The line where the sky meets the land; eye level.
Horizon line
Lines that are parallel in reality seem to come together as they are farther away from the viewer.
Convergence
The viewing place; bird’s eye view or looking from above as opposed to viewing from below or directly head on. From what location or height do you see the scene?
Vantage Point
The point at which lines leading into the distance appear to meet and disappear. The point of convergence. This is different from a vantage point.
Vanishing Point
the part of a scene that appears closest; what is in front of the middleground and background.
Foreground
the part of a scene that appears most distant; what is behind the foreground and middle ground.
Background
the middle distance; what is between the foreground and background
