Art Terms Quiz - Week 3 Flashcards
Line
one of the 6 basic elements of art and is a key component of most artworks - completely abstract works that involve unstructured color would be an exception.
shape
is created when lines intersect or become joined. For example, a circle is a joined line just as a square is the product of four lines that join each other. Shapes always have length and width - this means that they are 2 dimensional. In art, it is the concept of “form” that deals with 3-dimensions.
geometric shapes
can easily be measured because they have consistent lines. However, a circle is still considered a geometric shape because it is possible to express its area mathematically and to perfectly measure it.
organic/natural shapes
usually have curved lines and can be any shape. As its name suggests, organic or natural shapes are more likely to be found in nature or to be things that resemble nature.
contours
Any edge or line you can see on, in, or around a thing or shape. —the outside edge—usually called the “outline” —a fold, bend, wrinkle, or crease —an obvious change in color causing an implied or real line
positive shapes
the positive shapes or spaces will be the main object(s)
negative shapes
the negative shapes or spaces will be around the main object(s).
structural line drawing
refers to the lines that give you information about the structure of what you are drawing; does NOT include shading or color.
