Final Flashcards
Bloodstain photography 2 methods
Road mapping and Grid method
Road mapping technique
Identify bloodstains and patterns
Photograph:
overall surface
each stain
Outline perimeter w/ vertical & horizontal scales and place numbered labels, scales, and guides
Take another overall picture
Take each stain or pattern with scales & guides
Take close up photos of important pattern details or individual spatter for analysis
Grid method
- Take overall surface
- Identify individual patterns and photograph
- Grid into 2x2 or 1x1 squares and label or number
- overall grid surface
- each grid as an overall
- each pattern within grid
- each pattern within grid labeled, scales and guides
- each pattern within grid, closed up and analysis
If and when small spatter on surface
Can use reinforcement labels, indicate where stains are that can be removed after photograph
Lighting issues
- Insufficient lighting can miss stains,
- electronic flash can be an issue
- ring flash can be used
- addition lighting can be brought in
Camera settings for bloodstain photography
- aperture or Manuel mode
- ISO400
- F11
- SS- proper exposure, black or white background
- Tripod
Painting with Light
- ISO400 or 800
- aperture priority
- F11
- use additional people to fire flash while taking photograph
- Tripod
- bulb shutter speed
Surveillance rule of thumb focal length
2mm lens for every foot of distance between camera and suspect
ie 150ft=300mm
Focal length
Proper shutter speed to avoid blur
Shutter speed selection/freeze motion
1/125 walking or talking
1/250 jogging, jumping, bicycling
1/500 car traveling 30mph
1/1000 car traveling 60mph
Surveillance Shutter speed rule of thumb
Shutter speed must be selected to freeze anticipated movement, usually a minimum of 1/125 to hand hold, never drop below unless using a tripod
