What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is giving the “admonition of the Word of God” to bring about change in lives.
Counseling dates back to:
The earliest days of Judeo-Christian history.
Exodus 18:13-26
3 words used for “Counsel” in the Old Testament:

Safeguards
- Limit the counseling load
- Maintain the appearance of propriety
- Do formal counseling in the office
- Graciously decline gifts
As a best practice here at Word of faith, ministers do not counsel:
A person of the opposite sex.
Male ministers counsel males, and female ministers counsel females.
A minister at Word of Faith will only counsel a person of the opposite sex under the following circumstances:
- The counselee’s spouse is present
- A minister of the opposite sex is sitting in on the counseling session.
Transference is:
when the counselee projects inappropriate feelings and desires on the counselor.
Another transference problem is counter-transference. Counter transference is:
when the counselor responds to the client with inappropriate feelings of affection.
When storing files, the basic rule is to keep them:
In a locked file cabinet, which is, in turn, kept in a locked room. Access to the cabinet should be restricted to the counselor and possibly a confidential secretary.
Counseling records should be kept a minimum of:
10 years - Some churches keep them indefinitely.
In general, the minister (counselor) needs to remember that:
It is his/her responsibility to maintain confidentiality in all situations.
In a counseling session there are always more than 2 people:
Counselor, counsel, and the Holy Spirit
In each counseling session, the Holy Spirit must be:
acknowledged as the principal person.
We cannot provide Godly counsel apart from the ____ ____ and His _____. To do so, we would be grievously _______ against the Holy Spirit and the counselee.
We cannot provide Godly counsel apart from the Holy Spirit and His Word. To do so, we would be grievously sinning against the Holy Spirit and the counselee.

thorny ethical issue in the counselor-counselee relationship.
2 Big dangers in Counseling
- Doing what we, as pastors or counselors, shouldn’t do
- Not doing what we should do
Clergy has the responsibility (in most states) to:
Report suspected child abuse cases (whether physical or sexual), regardless of the source of information
When a suicide is in progress or when a lethal and workable plan is likely to be implemented, we must:
ACT IMMEDIATELY. We need to determine where the person is and get help to him or her immediately (call the police)
What determines whether we will be held liable for negligence?
The general rule is that we will be held to the standard to which a similar practitioner in our role is held. That standard is largely determined by how we market our services.
Under the principles of respondeat superior (in which the principal is liable for the acts of the agents), any lawsuit resulting from negligence on the part of a staff counselor acting on behalf of your church may involve: c
the pastor, the church, and the parent denomination.
The best medicine for avoiding lawsuits is preventive education, instead of:
corrective litigation’s
So educate yourself on these matters before you get started in counseling
