Final Flashcards
What are the three types of hearing loss?
- Conductive
- Sensorineural
- Mixed
What is the most common kind of conductive hearing loss?
Otitis media
What is the most common vowel error?
Neutralization
What is the range of a newborn screening? Why is this?
1K - 4K–> higher frequency hair cells are at the base of the cochlea and closer to the stapes making them easier to measure
What does VRA stand for?
Visual Response Audiometry
Explain a VRA test.
Sound is given and the child turns and looks at it. Usually there is something shiny or that lights up that keeps them wanting to look.
When is a VRA test given?
6-8 months
What does wpm stand for?
Words per minute
How many words per minute do deaf people average?
70 wpm
What are the two ways to screen an infant? What aspect of hearing do both of these tests test?
OAE and ABR tests–> physiological aspect not what is perceived
What is an OAE test?
Otoacoustic Emissions– pick up a low level echo from hair cell vibrations to determine if the inner ear is normal and healthy
What is an ABR test?
Auditory Brainstem Response– the nerves in the brainstem are stimulated and we can pick up a wave response which is based on how many nerves fire simultaneously
What are two events that can help identify hearing loss in a child?
- Preschool/ Kindergarten screening
- Delayed language
What is the multisensory approach?
Visual, Tactile, Hearing
What is a goal for an 8 month infant with severe/profound HL?
Awareness of sound
